Vogue Wedding Show 2015: The rundown

The Vogue Wedding Show 2015 kicked off in magnificent style at New Delhi’s hub of luxury, The Taj Palace Hotel on August 7th. A three day, invitation-only event, it saw the Crème de la Crème of the luxury industry, from designers to wedding planners, converge. We at Think Shaadi were on the ground from the first day, getting a first hand account of all the amazing designs, masterclasses and conversations on offer. Accompanying us for photography and cinematography were the ever cool and highly talented Ronnie and Shivali from Stories by Joseph Radhik.

It began with the ornate hotel transformed into a giant luxury circus, with stadium like proportions. Always praised for being the most “breathable” of wedding fairs, whereas many feel cramped and thrown together, Vogue makes sure to plan the event with military precision, giving spacial awareness a priority. This year was no different, with each area given its own enclave. We saw each artisan look at ease, as they presided over their own unique space.

For day one, we were treated to a masterclass, by Vogue India’s Fashion Director Anaita Shroff Adajania. The class was packed out, with brides-to-be and others. Anaita’s main advice was that essentially brides should always follow their instincts when it comes to choosing their wedding attire.

Continuing with day one, the second much-anticipated discussion took place, with, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Vogue India’s Fashion Features Director Bandana Tewari getting into conversation, with the brand and designer exclusively announcing their upcoming collaboration. It was an exciting and intriguing talk.

Over the course of the three days we were also given exclusive interviews with fashion designers and jewelers who showcased at the show.

Sabyasachi’s display of his latest collection was a feast of tradition and heritage, with deep, rich colours, consisting mainly of reds, oranges and vintage gold adornments. He has retained that signature style of making vintage elements work so effortlessly with the contemporary. It was the elaborate pattern’s that really grabbed our attention, mixing a variety of both rural and aristocratic floral themes.

Dia Mirza and Sahil Sangha Tie The Knot

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 18.36.01

Earlier this year Dia Mirza, former Miss Asia Pacific, Bollywood actress and producer, announced on Twitter that she was officially engaged to her long time beau Sahil Sangha.

Screen Shot 2014-10-18 at 18.31.21

Sahil proposed to Dia in the middle of  Brooklyn Bridge in New York, getting down on his knees to confess his love to Dia, and she of course said yes, as the New Yorker’s and tourists alike applauded and cheered for the couple. They were in the US for the IIFA 2014 awards in Tampa Bay and it was there where she made the announcement on Twitter. Ever since that day we at Think Shaadi have been waiting in anticipation for the wedding.

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 15.18.32

The couple had to wait a while to announce their wedding date, because they were busy working together as c0-producers on Bobby Jasoos. Dia finally let the cat of the bag in mid-July to reporters saying – “If I tell you everything right now, then there would be no surprise. But you would not need to play detective. I will get married in India itself in October.” Mirza told IANS. Then a few weeks later Dia broke the news that October 18 would be the big day!

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 15.56.37

The three day wedding celebrations started on the 16th of October, with the mehendi function, and Dia shared the news via twitter to her fans. The celebrations were handled by wedding planners Natasha Katgara Gocal and Erina DeAbreu of Divinity Weddings, who also managed Bollywood actress Vidya Balan wedding.

Screen Shot 2014-10-18 at 18.30.57

Dia wore a richly adorned marigold yellow anarkali suit, in chanderi fabric, designed by Ritu Kumar. It was teamed with a beautiful fuschia colour odhni. Sahil wore a masculine maroon kurta, to contrast Dia’s eclectic outfit.

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 16.25.07

Ritu Kumar said in a statement described her creation: “The kurta has a vintage cut used in the courts of Agra around the 15th century. The neck is deep and worked in embroidered gota patti on net like the technique used at the time. The gold metallic taar used is of silver worked in gold thread and dori to give it a stylised plant inlay look. Each panel is highlighted with a flowering buta. The odhni is fuschia worked with small butis of the same beaten gold gota patti, a fuschia brocade deep sinjaf finishes the edges of the outfit.”

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 16.20.49

October 17th was the Sangeet, with Dia choosing to go with a hypnotic blue and gold Anita Dongre lehenga, which she accessorised with a three string polki and pearl piece, with a large blue pendant. Sahil looked dashing in a signature black buttoned up Raghavendra Rathore bandgala.

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 16.50.37

Dia also choreographed a dance piece prepared specifically for the sangeet, which Sahil and his family members were eagerly awaiting to watch her perform.

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 17.36.53

The wedding and reception took place on the 18th at Rosha Farms, a private farmhouse in Ghitorni, South Delhi. It was was very intimate affair for Indian high society standards with guest size ranging from 100-500 during the three day celebrations. Notable guests included Rajkumar Hirani, Lara Dutta and Mahesh Bhupathi, Sushmita Sen, Roshan Seth, Nikhil Advani, Aditi Rao Hydari, Pallavi Sharda and Cyrus Sahukar. There was heavy security protecting the privacy of the couple and their guests.  They were however very sweet to come out and greet the waiting news crews outside the gates, to have some snaps taken.

Dia, went back to Ritu Kumar for the wedding day. She choose a subdued beige and green sharara inspired by Ritu Kumar’s Falaknuma collection, which highlights the heritage of craftsmanship that comes from Dia’s birth city of Hyderabad.

The wedding has been captured by our friends at The Wedding Filmer and they caught this beautiful moment of Dia Mirza moments before Sahil’s baraat arrived at her door. Dia captioned the moment perfectly – “I feel like I’m on a movie set, waiting in my van for my diva hero to arrive.”

Screen Shot 2014-10-20 at 09.04.42

Finally for the reception Dia choose to give with a gold and peach party lengha from Shantanu & Nikhil. They were thrilled to see Dia transform their outfit with such class and grace.

Sahil once told The Bombay Times in an interview, “What I love the most about her is that in one word, she is pure. She is very giving and all heart, which is also a problem as then you need to take care of your heart. She lights up a room as soon as she walks in.” We wish the couple a very long and wonderful married life xx

The Vogue Wedding Show 2014

With the Vogue Wedding Show just over a week away, taking place at  Taj Palace, New Delhi. We thought we’d cast our luxury loving eyes over some of the designers, handpicked by the Vogue team, to take part this year. As we have mentioned before, this year sees a wealth of talent, known for their creative zeal and meticulous attention to detail, ranging from couture to jewellery.

So, what makes the designers this year so special? Well let’s take a look at a handful of them. Firstly, there’s a common connection that binds all of them, whether it be the fashion designers or the jewellery designers. They each and every one possesses a pioneer spirit, a spirit which is deeply rooted in an age old sense of creativity.

Sabyasachi is the quintessential Indian designer; his inspirations are drawn from the rich and colourful history of Indian textiles, art, architecture and literature. His creations are always bathed in an historical flare, all encompassing patterns that dance across the fabric, yet forever with a lyrical sense of symmetry.

352

Manish Malhotra’s infectious joie de vivre for both women’s and menswear has always made him standout from the crowd, there’s no mistaking a Manish Malhotra design, the cuts, shapes, styles and embroidery are easy to spot, and of course easy to fall in love with. His bridal collections alone never fail to create a new feeling of wonder and awe with every season that goes by, typifying Bollywood decadence.

tarune

Well, what to say about Tarun Tahiliani. He is the man who encapsulates the Delhi glitterati, a playful and eternally curious creative sensibility. Tarun is a designer who continually shifts and morphs his style, melding together the traditional to the contemporary seamlessly.

GG (47)

Gaurav Gupta is a man who takes the words sexy and sultry to an entirely new level. Much like Manish, Gaurav has been a star of the Indian fashion industry since he first emerged into the spotlight, a tour de force, taking his female muse and turns them into princesses.

JJ Valaya brings power, unfettered power we should say, to his designs. It’s all about larger-than-life glamour, statement pieces which meld luxury and effortless grace together, in a magnificent bejewelled cocktail.

Shantanu & Nikhil’s design approach has attitude, flare and an unmistakeable panache, which is impossible to ignore. With creations that proudly mix together Indian culture with Western mores, It’s no surprise that they are the favourites, not just in South Asia, but across the world.

If you want feminine charm, look no further than Anita Dongre, her unmistakeable technique of balancing the beauty of the old, with the functionality of the new, is something so many designers find impossible to do. Anita is fast becoming the queen in her field, and it’s easy to see why.

Moving on to the jewellery designers, this year sees a number of big names, for example, Begani Jewels make for the perfect wedding accessories, with a finely tuned approach to design, Begani’s foundation is simplicity, and their pieces can go two ways, sticking with the simple, maximising minimalist beauty, to embracing the ornate and ostentatious.

Amrapali has created a language all of their own, a simplistic yet creatively virulent process, which merges ethnic styling with contemporary zeal, that crossed the cultural divides.

Vacheron Constantin is renowned the world over for producing aesthetically pleasing and vibrant time pieces, they have an age old technique which draws upon the exquisite and the divine. They are the masters of luxury.

Nirav Modi is all about classical design, with an emphasis on the sensual and delicate. His inspiration moves from culture to culture, whether it is Medieval Dutch art or French turn of the century Art Nouveau. Nirav is all about conjuring up the beauty of the world in jewellery form.

Decadence is the word du jour when it comes to Rose, founded by Biren Vaidya, when you look at his designs, images of age old glamour and distinction come to mind. Biren’s aesthetic is all about embracing the colour, the beauty of life.

Screen Shot 2014-07-25 at 09.31.03

It’s not just fashion and jewellery designers who will feature in the show, there’s also graphic designers such as Vivek Sahni, who has singlehandedly transformed the business of wedding invitations into an art form all of its own. Vivek’s designs are intricately made, miniature masterpieces that capture the personal feelings of love and excitement.

Screen Shot 2014-07-25 at 09.30.18

Then there is Vandana Mohan of The Wedding Design Company, Vandana goes way beyond the ordinary, staging weddings which are like fantastical dreams come to life. Her raison d’être is events, and over the years she has worked on some of the most inspiring and luxurious weddings in the world.

So, these are just some of the many designers and artisans at this year’s Vogue Wedding Show. It will be one of the most hottest and luxurious shows in the fashion calendar.

With only one week left, register now to get invited to the year’s most exclusive bridal extravaganza The Vogue Wedding Show 2014.
